CHOOSING A DOCTOR FOR EAR RECONSTRUCTION

WHO IS A MICROTIA SURGEON ?

The ears are one of the most difficult parts to reconstruct for a surgeon due to their unique composition and 3D structure with extremely fine details. For this reason, ear reconstruction surgery should be performed by a plastic surgeon who has a special talent and is dedicated to this job, in addition to having knowledge and experience in this field.

Although many surgeons in the world claim to have performed ear reconstruction, there are very few surgeons who have achieved results that are considered successful or, in other words, can make an ear that looks like a normal ear. There are only a handful of specialists in the world who stand out in this field with their excellent results. Unfortunately, we see many patients who say, "I wish we hadn't done it” after unsuccessful attempts by surgeons who do not have sufficient skills and experience.

UNSUCCESFUL RESULTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD

These are a few examples of poor children victimized by unexperienced surgeons world-wide. In these unsuccessful operations, the local skin and vascular structures, which are very valuable for ear reconstruction, are destroyed, three or four ribs of your child are wasted in each attempt. THE CHILD MAY EVEN LOSE THE CHANCE TO HAVE A NEW EAR RECONSTRUCTION PERMANENTLY.

Instead of getting despondent looking at these unsuccessful results, please do your best to find the right doctor for your child. Because the treatment of microtia is extremely safe in experienced hands, and the auricle made is indistinguishable from a normal ear. Here are the basic criteria that you can use for choosing a doctor for your kid.

DO YOUR BEST TO FIND THE BEST DOCTOR FOR YOUR KIDS

CRITERIA FOR CHOOSING AN EAR RECONSTRUCTION SURGEON
  • First, do your research and find the most experienced surgeons.

  • Second, tell the surgeons you are interviewing with that you want to see the results of their previous surgeries, talk to other patients' families, and make your decision afterward.

  • Ask to see their preoperative and postoperative photographs. If a surgeon tells you that they cannot show you any photos of their work, then their work is most likely substandard. Be very cautious! You should do more than just look at the photos, you should study them carefully. It is impossible to rate the quality of a surgical result on a small, low resolution photograph, so ask for large high quality images. Click here to visit our before and after photo gallery.

  • Please make this inquiry so that your child's tissues are not wasted by improper and inexperienced hands and their chance of a new ear construction is not lost.

  • If there is no experienced and reliable surgeon with demonstrable good results in ear reconstruction where you live, or if your opportunities are limited, my advice to you is to wait.

IMPORTANT WARNING

Dr. Mutaf is warning parents of children with microtia around the world about a very critical issue. Please be very skeptical about doctors who come to your location from abroad on behalf of charity organizations. Do not let them touch your children unless you are sure that they are among the respected microtia surgeons worldwide. Check if they are at least a member of ISAR, the International Society for Ear Reconstruction. Please do not leave your children in those inexperienced hands who are trying to exploit them under the name of charity. They are not there to help you, but they are using your children as guinea pigs to gain experience and improve their surgical practice.
