HEARING IN MICROTIA

IS HEARING AID NECESSARY ?

If the Microtia is unilateral, a hearing aid is not needed, however, if there is bilateral Microtia/Atresia, the use of a hearing aid is absolutely necessary for the child to hear and speak.  There are different types of these devices, which increase the bone conduction, are applied with hair bands, glasses or adhesives and need to stay on the bone behind the ear, however, bone conduction hearing devices that are integrated to the bone behind the ear with screws (BAHA) are increasingly used in recent years.

THESE DEVICES SHOULD BE USED FOR CHILDREN WITH BILATERAL MICROTIA AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.

There are studies on the development of smaller devices or devices that will remain in the ear for the solution of hearing problems.

Good hearing is very important for a child's speech and its effects on school success.
